Wisdom for the Task

What are the most challenging parts of your life?  Maybe your job has been difficult recently.  Maybe you have a ministry that has been exhausting or frustrating.  There may be difficult people or relationships in your life.  It could be anything, but we all have difficult tasks at times.

King Solomon was given a very difficult task by God, to govern His people Israel as their king.  Solomon knew this job was too big for him, saying in 1 Kings 3:7-8, “O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.  And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.”

Solomon’s response was not to despair or give up, but to rely on God, in verse 9 asking him to “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”  God answered Solomon’s prayer and gave him wisdom that made him world-famous.  The wisdom that only comes from God.

But this wisdom isn’t just for kingly or other grand duties.  Just as Solomon did, we can all pray for God to give us wisdom to manage our lives better – those hard jobs, difficult relationships, challenging ministries, and other things.  God doesn’t always solve our problems or remove our difficulties, but He does want to help us live wisely in the midst of them.  If He has given us things to manage, He will also give us the resources to manage them, including wisdom.

Therefore, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”  (James 1:5)

Remembering God in Our Affliction

Dear fellow travelers,

Psalm 119 is memorable in many ways, including that it is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses.  But the Psalm was also designed to be memorized in Hebrew, with 22 stanzas, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet.  In Hebrew, each stanza has 8 lines that each begin with the same letter.

It is also memorable for its topic: a lengthy meditation on God’s law and its positive, multi-faceted qualities.  The Psalm uses 8 words to describe God’s law, and all 8 appear in 5 of the stanzas while every stanza has at least 6 of them. [1]

However, in addition to meditating on God’s law, at least 7 verses also refer to affliction and/or its benefits in one way or another:

This is my comfort in my affliction,
            that your promise gives me life.” (verse 50)

Before I was afflicted I went astray,
            but now I keep your word.”  (verse 67)

It is good for me that I was afflicted,
            that I might learn your statutes.”  (verse 71)

I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous,
            and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.”  (verse 75)

If your law had not been my delight,
            I would have perished in my affliction.”  (verse 92)

I am severely afflicted;
            give me life, O LORD, according to your word!”  (verse 107)

Look on my affliction and deliver me,
            for I do not forget your law.”  (verse 153)

Why the repetition?  By repeating the idea of affliction in this Psalm, the writer wants to make one more thing memorable: in our affliction, God is faithfully present, giving us life, teaching us, and reminding us of His goodness.  His steadfast love remains, even when this broken world and our own sinful condition present endless difficulty.

The law cannot save us, and affliction in this world is difficult, but “we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”  (Romans 8:28-29)

What God uses all things for, and what He has predestined, is that His people will be conformed to His holiness: “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6). Even affliction, in God’s hands, contributes to our development in holiness.

As J.I. Packer sums up these verses from Psalm 119 in his book, Rediscovering Holiness, “God’s faithfulness consists in his unwillingness that his children should lose any of the depths of fellowship with himself that he has in store for them. So he afflicts us to make us lean harder on him, in order that his purpose of drawing us into closest fellowship with himself may be fulfilled.”[2]

Whatever our affliction, God will deliver us and bring us to glory. Amen.

Jesus Even Makes the Deaf Hear

As a child of deaf parents, some details of stories from the life of Jesus especially catch my attention.  This miracle recorded in Mark 7:32-37 is one example:

And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.  And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.  And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.  And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.  And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’”

In the second sentence, we see Jesus’ “bedside manner.”  His compassion for this individual led to specific actions, as noted by Warren Wiersbe: “Since the man was deaf, he could not hear our Lord’s words, but he could feel Jesus’ fingers in his ear and the touch on his tongue, and this would encourage the man’s faith.”[1]  Not only did Jesus heal Him, but He did it in a way that would be meaningful to this one man.

Another detail Mark records is that Jesus spoke, but why, if this man couldn’t hear him?  Jesus touched the man as a testimony to him, but these words were a testimony to anyone nearby that the power of Jesus healed this man, not the man’s response to the words, since he couldn’t hear them.  There was to be no question as to the source of the healing.

Third, the word “immediately” appears many times in Mark’s gospel, including at least 5 references to healing miracles (1:42, 2:12, 5:29, 5:42, and 10:52).  A big part of this miracle is that deaf people do not immediately “speak plainly” if they recover their hearing or begin using hearing aids.  It can take years of training.  By saying “he spoke plainly,” Mark makes clear that Jesus did not just put this man on the path to recovery; He gave Him a full recovery “immediately”!

Lastly, when the people said, “He has done all things well,” they were testifying that Jesus was fulfilling a Messianic expectation from Isaiah 35:5-6, which says:

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
            and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
            and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
            and streams in the desert

In this miracle and others, Jesus showed that He was the fulfillment of all the hopes of the Old Testament, and of all mankind.  His kingdom could overcome any problem, and His kingdom is superior to any other kingdom.  No problem He encountered was beyond His power and He offers a way to a world where all problems are solved for those who believe in Him.

The Name of the Lord

Some of the Ten Commandments are easy to understand, both what they mean and why they matter, to people of pretty much any religion, culture, or background.  As examples, “You shall not murder[1] and “You shall not steal[2] are similar to rules in most ethical systems and legal codes.  But when looking at Exodus 20:7 – “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” – someone who doesn’t believe in God can wonder why this matters.[3]  Even Christians might wonder why this is important enough to be in the Ten Commandments. 

One way I look at it is like this: imagine you’re in a room with 3 people: John, Jane, and David[4].  What if you constantly were talking to John and Jane about David but never talking to or even looking at David.  Acting like David isn’t even there.  This treats David as a non-entity worthy of no respect.  In the same way, flippantly saying “God” without any reference to the actual God treats Him as a non-entity worthy of no respect.  If David would be offended by this, how much more would Almighty God be offended?

Also, the commandment says to not “take the name” in vain.  The idea of a “name” doesn’t just refer to God’s literal name – Yahweh – but is also associated with God’s reputation and authority.  This is some of the sense of “hallowed be your name[5] in the Lord’s Prayer.  So, imagine robbing a bank “in the name of” the police.  Whether or not the actual police authorized you to rob the bank, using their “name” this way hurts their reputation and could lessen their authority in others’ eyes later.  In the same way, any misrepresentation of God’s authority or failure to give Him the respect He deserves takes His “name in vain”.  Committing sin “in His name” is never what He wants, but unbelieving observers might not know that.  Therefore, His reputation is injured in the eyes of many.

Lastly, implicit in the command to “not take the name of the LORD your God in vain” is the command that we should do the opposite.  We should glorify His name, so that His name will be “hallowed” on earth.  God cares about His reputation, and so should His people.  After all, our God is the God who declares:

I am the LORD; that is my name;
            my glory I give to no other,
            nor my praise to carved idols.” – Isaiah 42:8
